Understanding datasets, data templates, and data tables

In the Seer Data platform, datasets, data templates, and data tables work together to help you collect, organise, and use data in a consistent and meaningful way.

Think of them as three connected layers.

One dataset can have a single, or multiple, data templates. And each data template can have a single, or multiple, data tables.

Datasets: the container

A dataset is where your data lives in the platform.

It is the container that:

  • Holds data collected using a data template

  • Stores uploaded or connected data over time

  • Names the whole collection of data

A dataset may contain:

  • One or more data templates

  • Data contributed at different points in time

  • Data from multiple contributors (where enabled)

Access to a dataset is permission-based, so you control who can see or work with it. If required you can also set permissions at the variable level.

Data templates: the structure

A Dataset Template belongs to an Aggregate Dataset and is used to group raw data under a shared theme or area of focus.

Dataset Templates provide a consistent structure for collecting and managing data, especially when multiple contributors are involved. They help ensure data is entered in a clear, repeatable way and can be reliably aggregated later.

Contributors are always invited at the data template level. You can learn about sharing data templates with contributors in this article.

Data tables: the view of the data

Data Table is a structured table used to collect and store data within a Dataset Template. It is similar in layout to a spreadsheet, but designed specifically for consistent, governed data collection.
