What is an "Owner" in the platform?
In the Seer Data Platform, users can have different types of ownership, depending on their role and what they are responsible for.
What is an Owner?
There are two main kinds of Owners:
-
Organisation Owners
-
Asset Owners
They serve different purposes and have different permissions.
Organisation Owner
An Organisation Owner is responsible for managing the organisation itself.
Organisation Owners can:
-
Manage who is part of the organisation
-
Invite new members to join the organisation
-
Remove members from the organisation
-
Invite other organisations to partner with their organisation
-
Accept or decline partnership invitations
-
Upgrade users within the organisation to Administrator
- Transfer Ownership to another Member
Organisation Owners help control who can participate and collaborate at an organisational level.
Asset Owner
An Asset Owner is the owner of a specific item (or asset) within the platform.
Assets include:
-
Datasets
-
Dataset Templates
-
Suitcases
-
Insights
-
Dashboards
The user who creates an asset is its Owner, unless ownership is transferred through duplication or other platform actions.
Asset Owners have full permissions over the assets they own, including the ability to:
-
Control who has access to the asset
-
Change access levels for organisations or individuals
-
Edit and update the asset
-
Duplicate the asset
-
Delete the asset
Asset ownership is about control over what happens to the asset itself, rather than managing people in the organisation.
How Organisation Owners and Asset Owners differ
| Organisation Owner | Asset Owner |
|---|---|
| Manages organisation membership | Manages a specific asset |
| Invites and removes users | Shares or restricts access to the asset |
| Manages organisation partnerships | Edits, duplicates, or deletes the asset |
| Can promote Administrators | Has full control over owned assets |
A user can be both an Organisation Owner and an Asset Owner, but the roles are separate and apply in different contexts.
Why this matters
Understanding the difference between Organisation Owners and Asset Owners helps teams collaborate confidently — knowing who controls access, who can make changes, and where responsibilities sit.
