Instructions for Data Contributors

This article is about people who have been invited to edit or contribute to a dataset in the Seer Data Platform.

As a contributor you will have received a welcome and/or reminder email to make a data contribution. These emails include a link to either upload a data file or edit the tables of a Dataset Template.

Editing a Dataset Template

The data template tables are similar to spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel.

  1. Find the link in your email and click on it. This will take you to the Seer platform contributor login screen.

  2. Enter your email address and click Continue to receive a one time login code, which is sent to your email. Find the code and copy it into the Log in code form field and hit Log in.

  3. You will now see the tables you can edit. Click on the table you wish to enter a data contribution for.

  4. On the table data contribution page you can now edit the raw data:

    1. Edit the data cells - change, add or remove numbers.

    2. Your unsaved cell changes will appear highlighted. Hit the Save button to save your changes.

It is also possible to copy cells from Excel spreadsheets and paste them into the data entry page:

  1. In Excel make a selection of cells you wish to copy and copy them to your clipboard.
  2. Back on the Data entry page on the Seer platform, click on the cell that corresponds to the top left cell of your Excel selection. Then paste your clipboard and the data will be populated.

Uploading a data file

After logging in, contributors can:

1. Upload file

  • Upload their completed dataset file
  • See initial validation results
    • Initial validation checks that your file is in the right format and structured correctly

2. Submit data

  • If inital validation passes, the data is able to be submitted for user set rule checks
  • User set rules check that the submitted data contains values allowed by the dataset moderator
  • If user set rules check passes, the data is processed and submitted to the moderator for review.

Validation and user set rule failures will be displayed for ease of rectification.

Final note

Contributor Access is designed to make data collection easier, but it works best with clear guidance.

Before inviting contributors:

  • Share expectations for data format
  • Provide context on how the data will be used
  • Clarify whether updates will override existing data

A small amount of upfront clarity will save a lot of back-and-forth later.
