How to create a Pie chart

Create a pie chart to show how values contribute to a whole using proportional slices.

When to use a Pie chart

This format is ideal when you need to:

  • Show the relative proportions or percentages of categories within a whole, making it easy to see how each part contributes to the total.

  • Visualise simple, discrete datasets with a limited number of categories to avoid clutter and maintain clarity.

  • Provide a quick, intuitive snapshot of distribution that helps stakeholders grasp the overall breakdown at a glance.

How to build a Pie chart

Step 1: Select the Chart Type

  • In the Explore Data tool, go to the Build Your Chart step.

  • Under the Type tab, select Pie.

Note: The Pie chart option will be unavailable if any of the following conditions are present:

  • The chart legend contains multiple Variables
  • There are more than two multi-category Variables in the chart table
  • There are multiple chart tables enabled

Step 2: Create Pie charts

  • Navigate to the Chart tab.
  • Ensure only one chart table is toggled on.
  • If your chart table contains more than one multi-category Variables, you can drag a Variable into the Pie Series section. This will split your chart into multiple Pie charts based on the selected Pie Series Variable.
