How to create a Line chart

A basic line chart that connects values across categories. Useful for showing trends, comparisons, or fluctuations in one or more data series.

When to use a Line chart

This format is ideal when you need to:

  • Visualise trends, patterns, or changes across categories.

  • Compare multiple series using connected points to emphasise movement or direction.

  • Show continuous data such as performance over time, age ranges, or other progressive values.

How to build a Line chart

  • In the Explore Data tool, go to the Build Your Chart step.

  • Under the Type tab, select Line.

💡 Tips for Line chart

  1. Best for showing trends over time: Ideal when your data involves continuous values (like time), and you want to track changes or patterns.
  2. Use when clustered bars become dense: If a Vertical Bar Clustered chart gets overcrowded with too many categories, a Line chart offers a cleaner and more readable alternative.
