How to configure Dataset Metadata

Metadata helps describe and categorise your data so it's easier to understand, find, and use across the platform.

What is Metadata?

Metadata is the information about a dataset that explains what it is, where it comes from, and how it can be used. By recording key details like custodians, descriptions, and time periods, metadata makes it easier to understand datasets, find them in the Data Catalogue, and build reliable insights.

How to configure Metadata

Only the dataset owner can edit metadata.

  1. In the navigation menu, click Datasets and select Self-Service Dataset Collection (SSDC).
  2. Open a dataset and go to the Metadata tab.
  3. Click Edit to create or update metadata.
  4. Fill in the required details.

    • Note: Custodian and Data Source are mandatory fields.

  5. Click Save to update the Metadata.

Explanatory Notes

While editing Metadata, owners can add Explanatory Notes to provide additional context for interpreting data.

These notes appear in the Insight Source section when certain variables or categories are selected, highlighting important details, caveats, or guidelines relevant to those cases. This helps ensure datasets are understood correctly and used appropriately in insights.

How to add an Explanatory Note

  1. Click Add Explanatory Note.
  2. A modal will open.
  3. Select the Variables, Categories, and enter the Note
  4. Choose whether the note should apply to an Exact Match by using the toggle.
  5. Click Save to confirm.

Tips for Explanatory Notes:

  • Multiple Variables: If your note applies to more than one variable, the system automatically sets Exact Match = On and disables the toggle.

  • Exact Match = True: The note appears only when all selected variables and categories are present in the insight. The insight may include other variables or categories, but it must contain at least the full combination specified.

  • Exact Match = False: The note appears if any of the categories for the selected variable are included in the insight table, or if no categories are selected but the variables themselves are included in the insight.

  • Edit/Delete: You can edit or remove a note using the icons on the right.
